6 Key HVAC Terms You Should Know

HVAC Terms are important, because they are the first step towards gaining a deeper understanding of your HVAC unit. This is complex machinery, and sometimes even the technical jargon involved can be obscure to the uninitiated.

As the old saying goes, knowledge is power and that applies to air conditioning, too. If you understand these basic six HVAC terms you will be better prepared to operate and diagnose problems related to your HVAC unit.

A note on use: Whenever you see a term in italics, that means that the definition of that word is also available within the glossary.

Basic HVAC Terms

Coil

The heat exchange that allows your system to work happens here. Usually there are two coils in a HVAC system: The condenser coil in the outside unit, and the evaporator coil in the indoor unit. It’s advisable to clean the coils of your unit periodically, as this helps maintaining the efficiency of your system.

Compressor

This component is essential, because it pumps refrigerant through the HVAC system. Any hint of malfunction in your compressor should put you on alert immediately, as it may lead to serious damage to your unit.

Filter

A protection that prevents contaminants such as dust or lint from entering the HVAC system. They are a common cause of malfunction, so it’s important to check them constantly and change them when too much dirt accumulates on them.

HVAC

The acronym stands for Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning, and refers to the systems used for heating and cooling both residential and commercial buildings.

Refrigerant

This substance, often a fluid, transfers heat into or out of an interior space, such as a house. Refrigerant boils at a very low temperature and this is the reason why is so efficient at emitting and absorbing heat. On the other hand, Refrigerant Charge refers to the amount of refrigerant in the HVAC system.

Thermostat

A device, usually wall-mounted, that monitors the temperature in a room and makes automatic adjustments to the system in order to maintain the level indicated by the user. Nowadays most thermostats are digital and come with programmable features.
