Useful Tips to Reduce Central AC Unit Energy Consumption

The hottest time of the year is around the corner, and for those who have a central AC and heating unit, this represents a sudden increase in their electricity bills. Thankfully, there are many useful tips we can follow that will help us reduce the energy consumption of these home cooling units. This way, we will be able to not only save some money but to help the environment at the same time too. These tips include controlling our thermostat, giving maintenance to our central air conditioning unit, automating our home, and keeping the air flow through.

One of the best ways to reduce the energy consumption of our central AC units by learning how to control the thermostat. When we are having 100-degree temperatures outside, the feeling of walking into a cool house or room is unbeatable. However, we don’t need to turn the thermostat down to 60 degrees. If we set the inside temperature to anywhere between 75 and 78 degrees, we’ll have a room cool enough to enjoy.

Giving proper and constant maintenance to our central AC and heating units is an essential aspect of energy consumption. When we forget about this important aspect, AC units do not perform the way they should. This means that they will cool our house less and it will consume more energy. Therefore, we need to remember to replace old conditioning units with newer ones. Also, checking the filters of our units is important, too. If we don’t know how to do this, calling over a professional would be the best decision.

An excellent way to reduce our central AC and heating unit energy consumption is by automation our home. Even when at first this idea sounds a bit out of reality, automating our home equipment and appliances is easier than ever. Some electricity or security providers offer smart devices, like thermostats, that help you consume less energy. Some smart thermostats record your day and time preferences and start setting up the temperature based on that.

Last but not least, we can also optimize our energy consumption by keeping the air inside of our house flowing as much as possible. Whenever using the thermostat is not completely necessary, we can find other cooling alternatives. For example, using a fan is much more efficient and cost-effective than a central cooling unit, even when fans consume electricity, too. Turning them off when we are not in the room is a great option too, which doesn’t really apply for central AC units.
