When your AC won’t turn on it can be a frustrating experience, particularly during days of extreme weather conditions.

If your unit refuses to turn on, try these steps to determine whether the solution is as simple as pushing a button, or if you need to call a trusted AC expert.

Check the Shut-off Switch

When troubleshooting any AC problem (or any type or problem for that matter), you should begin with the obvious before moving on to more complex solutions. So, the first step is checking the shut-off switch, if your AC unit has one.

Check the Filters

Filters are a common cause of AC malfunctions. Some systems are programmed to stop working until a clogged filter is replaced. Remember to inspect your filters frequently and change them according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

Take a look at the Thermostat

As we have seen in a previous post, the thermostat is a common cause of problems with your AC. Check that the thermostat is set to cool or heat. If your thermostat is electromechanical, it may need to be cleaned. For more modern thermostats, inspect the batteries and change them if necessary.

Check the Circuit Breaker

If all the above components are OK, then it’s time to check the circuit breaker for your AC system. If it’s tripped, reset it once. However, If the circuit breaker trips again, don’t flip it on; call a trusted AC expert and they’ll take it from there.

Inspect the Drain Pan

When the pan below the indoor part of your system fills, it trips a safety switch so your AC won’t turn on. In this case, the most common culprit is a clogged drainpipe. You may try to remove the clog yourself turning off the system and using a wire brush. Or you can call a professional who will take care of the repair.
