4 Reasons Why Air Conditioners Cause Headaches and Dizziness

If we tend to experience regular headaches when we are at home or in our office, chances are these headaches are the result of overexposure to HVAC systems. During the last couple of years, many have looked into the reasons why air conditioners cause headaches and even dizziness in some people, and there are several reasons why this might happen. First of all, our AC units might be giving us dehydration, or it may be making our blood vessels contract. Also, if our AC units make excessive noise or if it is spreading chemicals and allergens, this is when air conditioners cause headaches, too.

AC Is Dehydrating You

One of the most common reasons why air conditioners cause headaches is dehydration. In order to cool off the air of a room, AC units draw out the humidity from these rooms. To some extent, getting rid of humidity can make a room feel cooler and more comfortable. However, if the air gets too dry, and we are not drinking enough water, we will definitely experience dehydration headaches. Therefore, it is important that we drink plenty of water during the day, especially when we are in cool spaces that use HVAC systems.

It Is Making Your Blood Vessels Contract

Another common reason why air conditioners cause headaches is that the temperature is simply too low. When we are too cold, the temperature makes the blood vessels in our brain contract, which can also give us mild and severe headaches. If we are experiencing headaches and we feel like the room we’re in is too cold, turn the temperature a couple of degrees up. This might make the room feel more comfortable and you can avoid having headaches, too.

Our AC Makes Excessive Noise

When it comes to air conditioners, giving them the proper maintenance and regular checkups is essential. This is especially true if our units aren’t the most recent models. One of the reasons why air conditioners cause headaches is because the AC compressor makes excessive noise. Depending on the frequency of the noise, we might experience mild or severe headaches, but if this is the case, then we know it is time for a checkup. We could also consider upgrading our AC unit and getting a newer model in order to get rid of the excessive noise.

It Is Spreading Chemicals and Allergens

Lastly, we need to make sure our AC unit is not spreading chemicals and other allergens, as this is another common reason why air conditioners cause headaches. If the vents of our unit aren’t clean, this means that there is dust, pollen, and other allergens circulating in our house. Also, if we use harsh cleaning chemicals, whether in our home or at our office, and we don’t have the proper ventilation, our AC unit will also be spreading chemicals around. So, make sure your HVAC system is properly maintained and that your rooms are properly vented.
