HVAC systems are complex machines, so it takes more than one post to take a good look at all their components. That’s why today we bring you nine more common HVAC terms you should know.

ASHRAE

Stands for American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers. Its main goal is to create more efficient heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.

Flue

The part of your furnace (see below) that acts as an exhaust to the byproducts of combustion.

Furnace

The main component of the heating portion of your HVAC system. Furnaces typically consist of four parts: burners that burn fuel, heat exchangers, a blower, and a flue (see above).

Packaged system

In this type of HVAC system, also called self-contained system, all the parts are housed in a single cabinet. (check out “split system” below for more information).

Refrigerant charge

The amount of refrigerant in your HVAC system. An appropriate refrigerant charge helps ensure that your system runs efficiently, lowering your energy bills.

Split system

This type of HVAC combines outdoor and indoor units, as opposed to packaged systems, where the compressor, coils, and air handler are all located in a single cabinet. Split systems are usually more efficient than packaged systems.

Two speed

As its name makes plain, this type of motor has two speeds. It shifts to high gear to reach the desired temperature, and once it does, it reverses back to low gear before shutting off. This process reduces the stress on components compared to single-speed motors.

Variable speed

This term refers to a motor that has several speeds of operation, which allows it to control more accurately the flow of air around your home (for more information about motors, see “Two speed” above).
