Your AC can smell for a variety of reasons, some more common or dangerous than others. But should you turn off your AC if it smells? Here we provide an answer.

Should I Turn My AC Off if It Smells?

While AC smells are a relatively common occurrence, not all AC smells are the same. Some of them point to issues that require immediate attention and serve as an indication that you should turn off your AC.

Burning Plastic and Sulfur/Rotten Eggs

A smell that combines burning plastic with hints of sulfur or rotten eggs is a strong indication that an electrical component in your AC is malfunctioning and a casing is probably burning. If you notice this type of smell, turn off your AC immediately to prevent further damage (including a potential fire) and call a technician.

Rotten Eggs

The smell of rotten eggs coming from your AC is still dangerous even if it doesn’t come with the smell of burning plastic, as in the previous example. The smell of rotting eggs may mean that there’s a natural gas leak in your house. Needless to say, this is a possibility that you shouldn’t take lightly. If you suspect that you are dealing with a natural gas leak, don’t try to troubleshoot the problem. Open your windows to disperse some of the gas, leave your home, and contact your local gas company.

A Sweet Smell

Another dangerous AC smell is a sweet smell similar to chloroform. This is usually a sign that your unit is leaking a refrigerant known as Freon. While Freon has been phased out because it contributes to global warming, it is still used in many older units. Since Freon can cause severe symptoms, you should turn off your AC and call an AC pro as soon as you  notice this type of odor.
