The 4 Most Common AC Compressor Issues

The compressor is one of the most important components of your Air Conditioning. It’s essential because it circulates refrigerant through the system, so any sign of potential malfunctions should put you on alert.

From overheating to unpredictable behavior of your AC unit, these are some of the most common indicators of a problem with your compressor.

Overheating

This issue may be caused by faulty wiring or a motor issue, although external electrical problems (such as power spikes) can have a similar effect. An overheated compressor can still operate in some cases. However, this problem shouldn’t be overlooked, since the heat can break down the oil used to lubricate certain components, leading to mechanical failure.

Compressor Won’t Start

There are situations in which you notice that the AC fan is working, but the unit is not achieving the set temperature. In that case, you should check the compressor. If the compressor won’t start, then turn down the thermostat to try to set it off. Wait, and if the compressor doesn’t start, then it’s time to call an experienced HVAC expert to help you decide if you should repair it or replace it.

The System Blows Warm Air

If your compressor fails, then it won’t be able to pump refrigerant through the AC system, which will blow warm air as a result. However, this may also a thermostat issue or a symptom of a refrigerant leak or a clogged filter. Only a certified technician can point out with certainty the origin of the problem.

The Unit Shakes Violently

When the condenser unit shakes noticeably every time you turn on your AC unit, it usually indicates that the compressor is having trouble turning on. This is a process known as a “hard start”. You should never ignore this sympton, since it typically occurs just before the compressor fails.

Keep in mind that you shouldn’t try to fix yourself any electrical problems you think your unit may have. Instead, observe the issues, make notes if necessary and call a professional.
