Learn more about your HVAC unit with these seven terms that are essential to make sense of these complex systems.

HVAC

HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. As its name suggests, this type of system provides heating and cooling to houses and commercial buildings as well.

According to Google, the term appeared around 1968 and has steadily grown in popularity ever since.

Air Handler

Also called air handler unit, this is the indoor portion of your HVAC system. It moves cooled or heated air through the ducts of the system and contains important components such as evaporator coil, blower motor, and air filter.

Compressor

This component of the outdoor part of your HVAC system compresses and circulates the refrigerant necessary for your unit to keep your home comfortable.

Condenser

Also an outdoor component of your system, the condenser collects or releases heat, according to the time of the year.

Evaporator Coil

Usually located in the air handler or in the furnace, this component of your HVAC unit absorbs heat, cooling the air blown throughout your home.

Refrigerant

A chemical substance whose main characteristic is the ability to transition between states: from liquid to gas and back again. The conversion from liquid to gas absorbs heat. HVAC systems take advantage of this physical law to cool the air in your home.

Thermostat

This component of your HVAC unit measures indoor temperature and makes the necessary adjustments to keep it at the levels set by the user. A programmable thermostat allows you to control the temperature in your home according to a preset schedule, so you don’t have to make the changes yourself every time.
