With summer in full swing, we rely heavily on our air conditioners to keep us cool and comfortable. So, it can be a frustrating experience when your AC fan fails to function properly, leaving you hot and bothered. With that in mind, today we take you through five simple steps to troubleshoot the AC fan problem.
Check the AC Power Supply
When you realize that your AC fan is running slowly or not running at all, the first thing you should do is check if your unit is getting power.
Sometimes, faulty wiring, a tripped breaker, or a blown fuse could cut the power supply to the AC unit. If this is the case, reset the breaker or replace the blown fuse, and your AC fan should start running smoothly again.
Clean or Replace Your Filters
Clogged air filters are one of the most common reasons why your AC fan is not working correctly. Dirt and debris accumulate on the air filters over time and reduce the airflow, creating the sensation that air is not circulating as it used to.
To solve this problem, clean or replace your AC air filter every 1-2 months, or as specified in your manufacturer’s manual.
Check AC Capacitor
The capacitor is a critical component that helps the AC fan motor to start and run smoothly. When the capacitor goes bad, the motor struggles to start, produces odd noises, or stops working altogether. If the capacitor fails, chances are good that you’ll need to replace it. In that case, it’s advisable to call in an HVAC technician to replace the capacitor.
Check the Fan Motor
If the above four steps fail to resolve your ac fan problem, it’s likely that the fan motor is faulty. The motor may have stopped working due to complex issues such as a blown motor, damaged wiring, or faulty internal components.
Remember: if you have no experience handling electrical appliances, or don’t feel comfortable doing it, it’s best to call in a professional HVAC technician to repair or replace the faulty fan motor.
